This is the first (less colorful) courtyard of the E-shaped "Monster Building" in Hong Kong (You can CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SECOND COURTYARD). It is actually composed of five buildings: Oceanic Mansion, Fook Cheong Building, Montane Mansion, Yick Cheong Building, and Yick Fat Building. This place has become famous partly because of its inclusion in recent films "Transformers" and "Ghost in the Shell".
Normally when you go to Hong Kong, you might pursue the shinier parts of the skyline, but I found the "old, crusty, slightly falling apart dark alleyways" of Hong Kong far more intriguing. Hong Kong is a place of keep history, and lots of old memories piled one on top of another. The Yick Fat Building (or Monster Building) is one of the greatest visualizations of Hong Kong's old crustiness that I have seen. The sheer density of people, the decrepit concrete jungle, piled higher than high, it's all here in a single view. It's hard to imagine a denser concentration of people than this, although these buildings are not actually that high, and there aren't too many other buildings of such density around here.
In any case, I was so smitten with this place that I ended up staying here from around 9pm to around 3am, shooting the largest gigapixel I could. Because it was night time, this was a bit of an issue, as I didn't want to stay up through the whole night, and I did have a plane to catch the next day. I first shot this courtyard with a 28mm lens and high ISO, just to be sure I got something. (My camera body was a Canon 5DS.). Then I used a 50mm lens and used 3-exposure bracketing. This took only about an hour, which gave me a lot of time to shoot the second courtyard. This panorama is probably the largest panorama ever made of this place, at 3.2 gigapixels (80,000 x 40,000 pixels). The version you see here is derived from a 16-bit PSB file, tonemapped HDR from the original 3 exposures. The panorama is made from 312 photos, 3 exposures at 104 positions.
This photo is also available as a true HDR, 32 bit EXR file.
